Staff Report

MT. MORRIS, Ill. — Local classic rock band the Bootleg Flyers will perform a two-hour show beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, June 22, at the Mt. Morris Band Shell.

The Bootleg Flyers play favorite hit songs by such greats as Elvis and Johnny Cash all the way up to Tom Petty and Dwight Yokum, with everything from the Beatles and Stones to Alice Cooper and ZZ Top in between.

Band co-founders Kevin Remrey and Larry Ubben have performed together since 1984’s Nuclear Mushroom’s all too brief, but well received, lifespan, and have been part of all sorts of boogie bands, including the Rockford Area Music Industry Hall of Fame Award-winning Blues Hawks and DVS. Remrey plays lead guitar, while Ubben switches between rhythm and bass guitar, with both providing lead and backing vocals.

David Weinberg of bluegrass band Reverend Tiny & The Kishwaukee Flats lends his prodigious vocal skills to the Bootleg Flyers and shares bass and rhythm guitar duties.

Pastor Doc Newcomb drives the Flyers’ groove with unparalleled style and finesse on the drums. He has previously performed with Pastors of Disaster.

Dan Elsasser sings soulful lead vocals and plays rhythm guitar. Elsasser and Remrey also perform in the acoustic duet Goin Postal.

All are local Morris Mountaineers, although Weinberg migrated to DeKalb for educational pursuits and is a recent graduate.

The band will also be performing as part of the Let Freedom Ring Festival from 7 to 11 p.m., Tuesday, July 3.

Concessions at the Mt. Morris Band Shell are on site, courtesy of Johnson’s General Store, providing ice cream, popcorn, nachos and a variety of drinks. The Band Shell can be found in the center of the village square at Front Street on Wesley Avenue, two blocks south of Route 64.
