Grand jury finds use of deadly force justified in Jan. 28 officer-involved shooting death

The Winnebago County Integrity Task Force has completed a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting that occurred Jan. 28. The information was submitted to the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office and reviewed by State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato. After reviewing the evidence in the incident, Bruscato concluded Rockford Police Officer Amado Soria was justified in the use of deadly force in the incident that resulted in the death of Phillip Johnson Jr.
Wednesday, June 20, Bruscato and Deputy State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross presented the evidence from the Integrity Task Force investigation to the grand jury for consideration. The grand jury determined Soria was justified in the use of deadly force during the Jan. 28 incident.
