Aug. 31 deadline for entrants in National Reuse Contest
• Salvage Too: Rockford’s Re-Use Center calls on local artists for submissions
Salvage Too: Rockford’s Re-Use Center has been invited to participate in the first National Reuse Contest, sponsored by The ReUse People of America, Inc. (TRP).
After four years as a local event in California, TRP has expanded the contest nationally. The national contest promotes innovative remodeling projects built by consumers using discarded materials that are normally sent to landfills. The mission is to keep discarded construction materials out of landfills across the country and use them in new building projects.
This year, TRP has expanded the contest to stores in the following cities and states Boise, Idaho; Kansas City; Rockford and Chicago; Charleston, W. Va.; Houston; West Haven, Conn.; Durham, N.C.; Mt. Prospect, Pa.; and California cities including Sacramento, Oakland, Pacoima, Orange and Los Angeles.
In conjunction with the National Reuse Contest, Salvage Too would like to invite local artists, sculptors and crafters to participate — with a call-for-entries in the first “FOSSA” (functional objects, sculptural and structural art) Reuse Contest.
The FOSSA contest includes all building projects as well as stand-alone artistic and functional pieces created predominantly from reclaimed materials.
FOSSA Reuse Contest
Each entrant in the FOSSA Reuse Contest is awarded a $25 gift certificate just for participating (redeemable for merchandise at Salvage Too).
All entrants are asked to provide six before-and-after photos, along with a brief 250-word description to include: Materials used on the project and the story of what motivated/inspired the creation.
Entries for the contest must be received by Aug. 31.
All local FOSSA Reuse Contest participants are invited to show/sell their work at the International Pumpkin Festival to Oct. 6 on the Comprehensive Community Solutions (CCS) campus, 917 S. Main St., Rockford. Winners will be publicly announced on that day. National winners will be announced Oct. 30.
Salvage Too is offering prizes for first-, second- and third-place FOSSA winners.
FOSSA Reuse Contest winners (in the structural category) will automatically be sent on to the National Reuse Contest.
TRP is offering an additional first-, second- and third-place prize. These winners will receive gift certificates awarded by TRP, and redeemable at the local store where each entry was submitted.
Framed 24-inch-by-36-inch posters showcasing the three national winners will be displayed at various green building shows and expos, including West Coast Green and AltBuild Expo. National winners and their sponsoring stores receive copies of the posters for local display.
Since 2006, CCS and Salvage Too have been taking part in one of the fastest-growing segments of the green building movement. Salvage Too is an innovative enterprise that converts huge volumes of landfill-bound waste into valuable community assets through environmentally sound deconstruction services, the sale of recovered and donated building materials, furniture, tools, appliances and other household items. These services are among the first steps in creating a more eco-friendly community. Furthermore, the tax-deductible donations of reusable materials to Salvage Too generates needed revenue for CCS while protecting the environment, creating jobs and training opportunities, and reducing effects of poverty.
Salvage Too is on the CCS campus at 917 S. Main St., Rockford. Hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday.
