Author and Poet

Many people in the stateline area enjoy vacation in Door County, Wisconsin. In Ellison Bay, the Clearing holds week-long seminars in the folk school tradition. Nestled on the cliffs of Green Bay and surrounded by forest and prairie, the Clearing offers a respite from hectic daily life.

There is still room in the class I am teaching at the Clearing during the week of Aug. 12. If you are interested in more information, please visit and click on “Summer Classes.” You can register online or call toll-free at 877-854-3225.

Here is the synopsis of “Writing Sampler,” the class I am offering from the Clearing catalog.

Poetry and Short Prose

Enjoy writing in the Clearing’s beauty and solitude. Experiment with nature writing, short memoir, journaling, poetry, and flash fiction with a supportive mentor. You will be given plenty of time to write as well as prompts to jumpstart your writing engine. Christine is known for creating positive, enthusiastic group interaction with zest and humor. Come and be part of the fun.

Returning students are welcome to work with Christine on independent studies, including manuscript critiques.

Optional topics might include “Dancing with the Editors,” which gives useful trade secrets for working with editors and publishers of small press; “Honey, I Didn’t Shrink the Poems,” which cultivates making a poem all that it can be rather than reducing it; as well as a variety of other topics that reflect student interest.

The week will culminate in a reading of work generated or revised during the week. Bring a journal, paper and pen, or a laptop (not required).

I hope to see you at the Clearing!
