Local officials protest closing of west-side driver’s license facility
Online Staff Report
Local officials will meet at the Illinois Secretary of State’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) facility at 3816 Auburn St., Rockford, at 10 a.m., today, Wednesday, July 11, to protest the Secretary of State’s planned closing of the facility.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White (D) announced July 10 the facility would be closed July 29 and a new facility would be opened at 4752 Baxter Road in September.
White said the closure of the city’s only west-side driver’s license facility was the result of failed lease negotiations.
“This new facility will better serve the public due to its more accessible location to the area expressways,” White said of the Baxter Road facility.
However, local officials have expressed disappointment in the closing of the Auburn Street facility.
State Rep. Chuck Jefferson, D-Rockford, said: “I feel that Rockford has been neglected as the third-largest city in the state of Illinois; to have a business closed in this area and not be notified until after the fact is total disrespect to the local community and the City of Rockford.”
The Auburn Street location is the first of the two Secretary of State offices located in Rockford. The location is convenient to the south and west sides of Rockford, and neighboring towns like Pecatonica and Byron.
The Secretary of State’s office is encouraging non-CDL drivers to visit the second Rockford facility at 3720 E. State St. CDL drivers are urged to visit the Elk Grove Village, West Chicago, DeKalb or Princeton CDL facilities until September.
According to a release from the Secretary of State’s office: “The new Rockford CDL facility will better accommodate truck and bus drivers because of its close proximity to I-39 and I-90. Due to its entrance and exit, it will be easier for trucks to access the facility, plus the testing area is newly paved. In addition, it features a larger parking lot to accommodate more customers.
“The new Rockford CDL facility serves truck, bus and passenger drivers and their vehicle needs, which include:
• vision, automated written and road tests for new CDL drivers
• CDL renewals
• Passenger vehicle testing for CDL drivers
• CDL guides, Rules of the Road books, and maps
• driver’s licenses and instruction permits
• vision, written and road tests
• duplicate licenses
• identification cards
• organ/tissue donor registration
• voter registration application
• vehicle stickers for vehicles
“The new facility will be open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The old facility has been operating in that location since 1994.
