The most important thing you can do in reporting the story of the baby found yesterday is to make the public aware of Illinois’ safe haven act. (Every state in the country has one.)
Illinois offers a safe option for a desperate parent in crisis. The Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection Act says a parent may hand an unharmed baby, 30 days old or younger, to personnel at any hospital, emergency medical facility, staffed fire station, or police station and walk away with no questions asked. If you or someone you know may be hiding a pregnancy, please call the national safe haven 24-hour crisis hotline 888-510-BABY (2229) for confidential help.
This is your chance to make a life or death difference for the youngest, most vulnerable of all, a newborn baby.
