South Main closure now in effect until further notice

South Main Street from Cedar Street to Chestnut Street and Cedar Street to South Church Street will now be closed until further notice, the City of Rockford announced July 19.

The closures were originally set to last through the end of the work day Friday, July 20, as crews work to demolish the Tapco building.

A detour has been set up as follows:

• Northbound on Illinois Route 2 will detour west on Morgan Street, north on South Winnebago Street, east on Chestnut Street and back to Illinois Route 2 (South Main Street); and

• Southbound on Illinois Route 2 will detour north on Cedar Street, south on South Winnebago Street, east on Morgan Street and back to Illinois Route 2 (South Main Street.
