53-year-old Rockford man found dead of gunshot wound

At around 12:40 p.m., Sunday, July 22, Rockford police officers were sent to 422 S. Henrietta Ave. for a medical assist. Upon arrival, officers located a black male, later identified as 53-year-old Michael Hughes, laying face down.

The victim was determined to be deceased. The cause of death was suspicious and investigators were called to the scene. The preliminary investigation shows the individual sustained a gunshot wound. The Winnebago County Coroner ruled July 23 that Hughes died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
