Bonzi Productions stages ‘Grease’ Aug. 1-5
Bonzi Productions (BP) will be presenting the sensational 1950s musical Grease this summer, Aug. 1-5, at the Rockford Lutheran High School Performing Arts Center. This well-known community theater group is again ready to present high-quality family theater at family affordable prices.
This all-time favorite movie/musical follows Danny, Sandy and their T-Birds and Pink Ladies as they live and learn through life’s trials and tribulations in their senior year of high school.
The story begins with a proverbial high school reunion led by principal Miss Lynch, played by Lori Beach, and a valedictorian welcome speech by our favorite nerd, Eugene (Connor Johnson). We are then transported back to 1959 at Rydell High School, where the boys tried to be like Danny (Jason Peck), cool, and the Pink Ladies prepared to once again Rule the School; led by tough-skinned Rizzo, played by Sam Bonzi. Add sweet, naive Sandy (Colleen Bunt), Danny’s lost love, and you’ve got entertainment.
All your classic Grease songs are here, like “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightning” (complete with car), and the dance extravaganza, “The Hand Jive” — musically directed by Andrew Kortze and cleverly choreographed by Hannah Zammuto. The multi-talented cast consists of seasoned BP veterans as well as numerous newcomers, adding that extra theatrical magic to this summer’s production.
“Audiences have seven opportunities to enjoy this great show,” said Todd Bonzi, co-owner of BP and reprising his role as Teen Angel in “Beauty School Dropout,” aside Marisa Sanchez as Frenchy. “This is one of my all-time favorite shows. I literally saw it 22 times in theaters as a kid. So, I am very excited about presenting this musical.”
Director and co-owner Michele Bonzi said she looks at this as a true theatrical challenge.
“I’ve always wanted to bring this story to life on the stage; and of course, with my own flair,” Michele Bonzi said. “I love working with such a melting pot of actors, and I’m very happy to be directing my family; including my son Ben’s dog, Bixie, a bona fide Pink Lady.”
Don’t miss this fun-filled journey (compliments of Andrew Kortze) of live theater. The production runs Aug. 1-5 with show times at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday-Friday; 2 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday; and 2 and 7 p.m., Sunday.Tickets are $12 adults, and $10 for seniors and kids 12 and younger. Call (815) 877-9551, ext. 140, to order reserved seats, or buy tickets at the door. Rockford Lutheran High School is at 3411 N. Alpine Road, Rockford.
