Mr. Davis,

I get it, you don't like unions.

I didn't address corruption because there is corruption in nearly all walks of life. Corruption, where it is found, should be eliminated. There is corruption in business, government, churches, and more. Just because there is corruption in an industry, you don't deny people their rights to participate or to fix it so it does work for them.

I do appreciate the discussion. Thanks for taking the time to share your opinion.

Unions are for the lazy man. I do belong to a union (not by choice) and it is the worse representation of workers I have ever seen. If you are a good employee your company will take care of you. If you choose to be lazy the union will protect you. Unions are worthless...people just need to stop being lazy and put more energy into doing a good job at work, and less energy on how to beat the system!

Paul:
You didn't even mention the“Corruption in the “Union”. How do you really believe the "Unions" are crime free. Do you think this part of union is ok? Where is Jimmy Hoffa Sr. Do you think Jimmy Hoffa jr. might know.
Like I said before Who is John Gault. Between the obama communist government & the communist unions, where do you think this Great County is going? I still believe the Great United States working people should free to work without have to pay dues to Corrupt Unions. If the working people want to organize I have no problem with that. Make ever state in the United States a RTW state and see how the "Unions" make out. If Illinois was a RTW state maybe there would be companies that would move here, expand here and the Chicago Unions that run this state would,t have to raise my & your income taxes 66 2/3% every year to pay the union pensions & health care.

Mr. Davis,

Opting out of the union was your choice, and that is fine. You were in a union and you chose your own destiny, you got out. Some folks like unions, some not. While it is true unions don't pay some of the same business taxes other businesses pay. It is also true some for-profit businesses pay little or no taxes. Those are both problems with out tax code, not the institutions or their members or their employees.

Many businesses have dress codes, codes of conduct, and some even mandate your participation in activities outside the business. Many employees endure these restrictions too. I worked for one company that automatically deducted a contribution to the United Way from our paychecks. We could increase the deduction, but we couldn't remove it altogether. I left the company eventually, and the company is no longer in business.

We don't even have open elections for state and national offices, why would you expect the same for businesses? If we start talking open elections, let's start talking equal ballot access for third parties and independents. Then that spirit may spread to other businesses and organizations.

My point again is not to convert you to a union supporter. I simply ask that you not advocate for the abolition of unions. Take away the right to unionize, then you start down the dark path of restricting other rights.

Take care,

John:
I think that we agree on one thing. A man has the God given right to be free, that’s what The United States was founded on.
Thomas Jefferson said ““a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned.”
I believe every working person has the right to choose if they want to be in a “Union” or not.
If the “Union” believed in the rights of people to make their own decision every company, every government agency would have the right to an open election to decide if they wanted to be in a “Union” or not.
With all that said: You have not addressed the “Corruption in the “Union”. How about the NLRB and their ties to the “Union”
Google: Obama pick for NLRB was top lawyer for union tainted by mob ties, history of corruption

Tell me the UAW. AFL-CIO, IUOE, TEACHERS UNION all believe that a person has the right of freedom of “Choice”
Google; http://www.teachersunionexposed.com/embezzlementexcess.cfm
If you can condone the “UNION” with information like this I guess we are way to far apart in believing a person has the right to choose his own destiny.
I was forced to pay “Union Dues” once when I took a teaching position with the Wisconsin College System. I only stayed 1 year and have worked the rest of my life with companies where I didn’t have to pay to work, and all of these companies make a profit and have to account to the “Government” every year what was taken in and pay taxes, does any of the “Unions” mentioned above pay taxes? I think most of them are non profit originations.

John, then blame the politicians we've elected for making what you think are bad business decisions. Don't deny residents their rights because of decisions made by elected leaders. Elect new leaders.

Mr. Davis, the question is not whether or you like unions or what industries they are popular in. Unions have the right to exist as an extension of your freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to create a legal business model that works for you. You may not go to or like your neighbor's church, but you don't deny that church's right to exist do you? I'm not a big fan of Microsoft, its products, or its business practices, but I don't advocate dismantling the company. I simply choose not to support it.

Also, while some of those companies you mentioned don't use union labor for assembly now, some have used union labor for assembly in the past, and some may use union-made components for the cars assembled in their plants now. In addition, those companies have been forced to pay more reasonable wages because of the competition from organized labor.

I'm not asking you to walk a union picket line, I'm simply asking you to respect the right for unions to exist and compete fairly in the labor market.

I don't have a problem with unions in the commercial world, but unions in the Government work forces is WRONG. Look at Slim-o-nois for example. Policitians cater to, and give away the farm to unions in an attempt to bribe them for their support.

Average citizens like me are screwed, the politicians do whats best for their careers, the unions do whats best for them, and the taxpayer????? Oh well, he or she is screwed.

How can Paul Gorski believe anything he said in this commentary?
Who is the cause of the (used to be big 3) being shut out by Toyota, Honda, Hyndia, Kia.BMW, Mercedies, VW?
What does Mr. Gorski believe is the reason for this. maybe UAW? All of thses companies are manufacturing in ths USA without any "UNION" help.
