New field turf to arrive at Auburn, Guilford high schools

Construction on two of the Rockford School District’s football stadiums is nearing completion with delivery of their new field turf scheduled for this Friday, Aug. 3.
Both Wyeth Stadium at Rockford Auburn High School and Swanson Stadium at Rockford Guilford High School are getting major improvements this summer, and completion of the work should be done in time for the start of the upcoming football season.
“The district is spending $1.3 million at Wyeth for stadium seating and turf improvements, and $1.4 million for the same work at Swanson Stadium,” said Rockford Public Schools Chief Operations Officer Todd Schmidt. “The improvements will move those two stadiums to the top of the scale for NIC-10 facilities.”
New Auburn Head Football Coach Dan Appino said the improvements have generated a lot of excitement among the Knights athletes.
“Students can sense the profound commitment level of both the district and Auburn High School to create a first-class athletic environment for them,” Appino said. “It is the expectation of the coaches, faculty, administration and parents that these young men and women respond accordingly to that investment by training harder, studying more rigorously, and developing their talents and gifts to the highest level.”
The improvements are part of District 205’s summer construction plan, which will pour more than $9 million into district schools for capital projects and building upgrades. The upgrades are also one more step to moving toward 21st Century Learning Environments, one of the major goals of the Readiness Rocks! program.
The completion date for both projects is expected to be Monday, Aug. 13. It’s anticipated both schools will hold a small ceremony at both of the stadiums to mark the completion of the work and celebrate the start of the school year.
