Monday, July 30, demolition began in the North End business district for the construction of a “roundabout” intersection at North Main and Auburn streets. The traffic backups at the intersection were unacceptable to some state and city officials, but did not concern others, including businesses in the area who enjoyed the fact that drivers had to slow down and could notice their businesses. The demolition of the former Smith Oil service station at the main intersection, and the former Paesano’s Restaurant Monday, at North Main Street and Myott Avenue is the beginning of a process that will not be completed until next year. Several of the buildings in between the two demolitions are in court for eminent domain proceedings because of disputes on the value of the properties. Some critics have said this is merely another form of the “tear-it-down” urban renewal of the 1960s, ridding the neighborhood of unwanted or controversial businesses, such as JT’s Bourbon Street Grille.
