[1]More than 150 volunteers participated in the Ninth Annual Pecatonica River Cleanup organized by the Rock Hollow Conservation Club and United Sportsmen’s Youth Foundation (USYF) of Freeport. Volunteers came from Dixon, Rockford, Pecatonica, Freeport, McHenry, Monroe, Galena, Stockton, Pearl City, Garden Prairie, Wonder Lake and even Phoenix. Miss Illinois Megan Ervin also made an appearance. More than 10 tons of garbage were pulled out of the Pec including plastic barrels, picnic tables, 300 tires, five abandoned sunken boats, many plastic and glass bottles and cans. Freeport area resident Chris Wenth (pictured above) had fun finding a football, dart board, Miller beer sign and a small refrigerator. USYF President Brendan Walsh said: “We’re teaching these kids to take care of their community and teaching by example. A lot of kids learn better by doing. I’d really like to thank Adams Equipment and Alber Towing for their heavy equipment. Also, many thanks to Holden’s Tree Service for their work and chainsaws.
