Man sentenced to total of 27 years for attempting to flee trooper, possession of heroin and cannabis

Ricky Guinyard, 24, was sentenced by Judge Ron White to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections July 27 for the offense of aggravated battery; 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of possession with intent to deliver cannabis; and five years for the offense of possession of heroin.
At approximately 7:22 p.m., March 17, Illinois state troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 2008 Chrysler for speeding on Kishwaukee Street. The troopers noticed an overwhelming odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. They identified the driver as Guinyard, and asked him to step out of the vehicle.
Guinyard did not want to exit the vehicle, and attempted to drive off. The troopers were able to gain control of the vehicle and remove the keys from the ignition.
As Guinyard began to exit the vehicle, he attempted to flee and struck one of the troopers in the head with a closed fist. Guinyard ran northbound on Kishwaukee, but was apprehended. During a search of the vehicle, the troopers located cannabis, heroin, a scale and baggies.
Aggravated battery is a class 2 felony with a sentencing range of three to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections; however, because of the defendant’s previous criminal record, his sentencing range increases to three to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Possession with intent to deliver is a class 3 felony with a sentencing range of two to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections; however, because of the defendant’s previous criminal record, his sentencing range increases to two to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Possession of less than 15 grams of heroin is a class 4 felony with a sentencing range of one to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections; however, because of the defendant’s previous criminal history, his sentencing range increases to one to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
All three sentences will be served concurrently.
