Professional hockey coaches mentor participants at Park District Hockey Camp

Online Staff Report

Participants in the Rockford Park District’s Select Summer Camp will receive the same advice and guidance as NHL hockey players this week.

Detroit Red Wings Assistant Coach and former IceHogs Coach Bill Peters will be a guest coach at Select Summer Camp Monday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 10. Select Summer Camp takes place at the Jr. IceHogs Off-Ice Training Facility, 312 N. Madison St., Rockford, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Select Summer Camp is for high-level, competitive players who want to reach a higher level of skill development with no shortcuts. Camp consists of a five-and-a-half hour session each day on the ice, and optional off-ice training. There is also a shooting station and creative stick handling practice.

Select Summer Skills participants working to improve goalie skills will receive expert advice from Mark Bernard, general manager of minor league affiliations for the Chicago Blackhawks. Bernard is a former professional goalie, and was once head coach of the Rockford IceHogs. Bernard will run the goalie section of Select Summer Camp Monday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 10.
