Man sentenced to 25 years for armed robbery, 14 years for armed habitual criminal

Antawan Zills, 29, pled guilty Aug. 6 to armed robbery and armed habitual criminal, Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announced Aug. 7.
Zills was sentenced to 25 years for the armed robbery offense and 14 years for the armed habitual criminal offense.
At 12:42 a.m., July 25, 2011, officers responded to 2829 Kenmore Ave. in reference to an armed robbery. Witnesses reported two suspects approached them, one armed with a firearm, and ordered them out of the car at gunpoint. The witnesses reported the suspects took various items from them and then fled. Officers identified Zills as the suspect with the firearm.
Zills provided a written statement detailing his involvement in the armed robbery.
Armed robbery is a class X felony with a sentencing range of six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). Armed robbery with firearm enhancement is six to 30 years in the IDOC, to which the court must add 15 years, so the real sentencing range is 21-45 years. This is a day-for-day sentence, and will run concurrent with the sentence imposed on the armed habitual criminal offense.
At 4:25 a.m., July 17, 2011, officers responded to 1804 Randolph in reference to an armed individual. A witness gave a description of an armed subject, and that person was later identified as Zills. Zills admitted his involvement to police.
Zills was previously convicted of the forcible felony of arson in Winnebago County and of the class 2 felony violation of the Illinois Controlled Substances Act in Winnebago County.
Armed habitual criminal is a class 1 felony with a sentencing range of six to 30 years in the IDOC. Truth in sentencing applies at 85 percent.
