Conor,

Libraries have become centers for a variety of educational activities, community events, and even places where patrons learn to create print and digital media. That said, RPL may or may not be the right custodian of the Sullivan Center.

While the Sullivan Center isn't as large as the Community Building in Belvidere, it doesn't have to be. We already have some facilities for really large events. We do lack a multipurpose venue for smaller events though. I can tell you from personal experience there are groups that would like to hold events downtown, but can't because of the lack of an appropriate venue. I find it odd that some residents oppose the RPL managing the Sullivan Center because of a reported lack of management success. All the while not raising a fuss over the Winnebago Landfill expansion while concerns remain regarding its management of air, land and water problems surrounding the facility.

You can object to RPL managing the Sullivan Center, but come up with an alternative. (RAVE isn't an alternative, the management company employed by RAVE is looking for bigger events.)

Has Mr. Autry actually been in the Sullivan Center? If so, he will know that it is nowhere near the size of the Belvidere Community Building and, therefore, could never offer the scope of services as Belvidere does.
He also seems to be a bit behind the curve ~ or conservative ~ in what libraries have already become.

"Darnell Autry" - Gorski for President!
I'd like to think that is a vote in support of doing something constructive with the Sullivan Center.

Thank you,
Paul Gorski
