Aug. 14 follow-up town hall meeting to address closure of west-side driver’s license facility

Online Staff Report

A follow-up town hall meeting to address the July 29 closure of the Illinois Secretary of State’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) facility at 3816 Auburn St., Rockford, will be at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14.

The meeting will be in the auditorium of Ellis Arts Academy, 222 S. Central Ave., Rockford.

Citizens will have an opportunity to voice their concerns and sign a petition that will be delivered to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White (D) and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D).

State Rep. Chuck Jefferson, D-Rockford, said, “A group of concerned citizens are committed to making sure those citizens on the west side of Rockford and those west of Rockford have access to the services provided by the Secretary of State.”

The Auburn Street location was the first of two Secretary of State offices in Rockford. The second Rockford facility at 3720 E. State St. remains in operation.

The Auburn Street location was convenient to the south and west sides of Rockford and neighboring towns like Pecatonica and Byron.

A new facility is expected to open in September at 4752 Baxter Road, near Interstate 39 on the city’s far southeast side.
