Back-to-school day of community service set for Saturday, Aug. 11

Going back to school in the fall is an exciting time for students, but it can also be a struggle for families who are facing tough economic times. Buying backpacks and school supplies can be an extra burden. Local schools are also facing budget cuts, so repairs and other projects are being put on the back burner.
Seeds to Succeed is a back-to-school day of community service Saturday, Aug. 11 in Chicago, Elgin, Aurora, Rockford and many other areas to help kick off a positive, successful school year for children in our communities. It is sponsored by the United Methodist Churches of Northern Illinois.
Volunteers in Machesney Park, Ill., will be working on painting and cleaning up the grounds at three elementary schools in the Harlem School District. Volunteers will meet at Hilltop Ministry Center at 8301 Mitchell Road, Machesney Park, Ill., at 8:30 a.m.
A back-to-school festival will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at Hilltop Ministry Center with information and sign-ups for a variety of local youth-based organizations including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Rockford Boys and Girls Club and the United Way I-read program. An anti-bullying workshop for parents and children will be at 2:30 p.m. at the center. A community celebration will wrap up the day’s events at 4 p.m. with music and special guests.
Grace United Methodist Church, 3555 McFarland Road, Rockford, will be collecting school supplies and backpacks for Shirley’s Place in Rockford Aug. 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Shirley’s Place is a restorative justice program in Rockford run by the Salvation Army.
In Rochelle, volunteers will be working at Central School, 444 N. Eighth St., painting the ceiling in the cafeteria, cleaning the outside of the first-floor windows, cleaning the district office and other odd jobs to help spruce up the building before the first day of classes.
