Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center’s next “Jazz at Emerson” concert featuring Frank Calvagna with Opan Jii is coming up at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16, at the historic Emerson House, 420 N. Main St., Rockford.

Regional Latin/smooth jazz guitarist Frank Calvagna will perform with guitarist Mike Youngblood, bassist Fernando Zumbado and percussionist Paul Van Altena.

Repertoire will include Flamenco-flavored contemporary instrumental music in the vein of groups like Acoustic Alchemy, the Rippingtons and Gipsy Kings.

Freewill donations will be accepted; suggested amount is $10. Proceeds benefit the musicians and the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center.

Jazz at Emerson” takes place one Thursday per month from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Emerson House in the heart of downtown Rockford. Enjoy the swinging sounds of jazz, relax with a glass of wine and light refreshments, and meet the performers after the program. Doors open at 5 p.m. Seating is limited.
