Rockford schools to cut ribbon on two renovated high school football stadiums Aug. 21

Rockford Public Schools will host ribbon-cutting ceremonies to celebrate the completion of major renovations to Wyeth Stadium — home to the Rockford Auburn and Rockford Jefferson teams — and Swanson Stadium — home to the Rockford East and Rockford Guilford teams.
“We are excited to show the community another example of how we are investing in our schools and our students,” said Rockford Public School District 205 Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Willis. “These stadiums are a testament to our commitment to improving our schools and creating an environment where students can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.”
Dr. Willis will be joined by school administrators, coaches, student-athletes and local leaders at the ceremonies.
The Wyeth ribbon-cutting will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Rockford Auburn High School, 5110 Auburn St.
The Swanson ceremony will begin at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Rockford Guilford High School, 5620 Spring Creek Road.
The district spent $2.7 million for stadium seating and turf improvements at both locations — an investment that will put those stadiums at the top of the scale for NIC-10 facilities.
Athletic Director Mat Parker said the stadium improvements are generating excitement among students, coaches, staff and the community.
“Our goal with these renovations is to create a place that will welcome the community back into our stands and give our students a source of pride and an incentive to excel,” Parker said. “These stadiums are a game-changer. They have the potential to dramatically improve the atmosphere in our schools.”
These improvements are part of a plan to pour more than $9 million into capital projects and building upgrades across the district. These upgrades put Rockford schools on pace to reach its goal of having “21st Century Learning Environments” for all students, one of five “Readiness Rocks!” initiatives.
