According to their website, River Action’s Floatzilla 2012 – the Quad Cities’ Third Annual paddlesports celebration – was held Saturday, Aug. 18. The event culminated with a Guinness World Record attempt to assemble the largest flotilla of kayaks and canoes on Lake Potter, part of Sunset Marina on the Mississippi. The record is 1,900 boats in one flotilla. River Action’s Project Manager Dan McNiel estimated the event may have gathered up to 1,600 boats, more than 100 more boats than last year. Photographs taken from a crane and plane are now being analyzed. Participants enjoyed a trade show, live music and food. The festival included camping, guided floats on the Quad Cities Water Trails and beginner-friendly paddling lessons and programs. River Action’s Executive Director Kathy Wine was very pleased and said she is looking forward to next year. For more information, call (563) 322-2969. (Photo by Frank Schier)
