Loves Park man charged with DUI after hitting State Police squad car

PECATONICA, Ill. — At approximately 10:06 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, a motorist crashed into a parked Illinois State Police squad car. A District 16 trooper was conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of Alpine Road and Turner Road in Rockford.
The fully-marked squad car was parked on the right side of the road with all emergency lighting activated. A red 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix traveling north on Alpine Road struck the rear left side of the squad car, causing substantial damage to the squad car and totaling the Pontiac. The trooper was out of the car at the time of the crash and was uninjured.
The driver of the Pontiac, Ryan D. Gonzales, 22, of Loves Park, was transported to Swedish American Hospital, where he refused treatment. Gonzales was then arrested and cited for driving under the influence, improper lane usage and failure to wear a seatbelt.
Illinois State Police District 16 Commander, Capt. James Alexander, said: “One of the Illinois State Police’s top priorities is removing impaired drivers from our roadways, and at the time of this crash, the trooper was working a patrol shift with the specific goal of locating and arresting DUI drivers. With the upcoming holiday weekend, impaired drivers should consider this an early reminder that troopers are watching for you and will take you to jail.”
