Sept. 27 public meeting with sheriff to address jail population, jail alternative programs

The Winnebago County Jail is at capacity again, according to Winnebago County officials, and may need to be expanded. Meanwhile, funding for alternative programs to help keep people out of jail has shrunk and is now being used by the Ninth Circuit Court.
Rockford Urban Ministries (RUM), an outreach of the 20 United Methodist congregations (as well as five other churches), supported the construction of the new jail as long as alternative funding would be shared in an attempt to keep people out.
The public is invited to a meeting with Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, at Christ United Methodist Church, 4509 Highcrest Road (at North Alpine; enter from the south side of the building).
Pastor Jeff Peterson from the Greater Rockford Re-entry Coalition (composed of service providers to former inmates) will also talk about resources for those released back into the community.
“I have asked the sheriff to bring staff from the Winnebago County Jail to address the overcrowding,” said Stanley Campbell, director of RUM. “I have also invited staff from the outreach jail ministry as well as some of the alternative programs that receive the meager funds that are left.”
