Gardening volunteers receive teamwork award

U of I Extension Winnebago County Master Gardeners received a State Teamwork Award for their efforts in the support, education and coordination of nearly 40 community gardens in the Rockford area.

Cyndie Hall, Carla Haney, Jeff White and Rachel Walters-Stefanini were recognized at the State Master Gardener Conference Sept. 7 in Crystal Lake for their Master Gardener volunteer efforts to help support community groups and other Master Gardener volunteers in establishing community gardens.

Community gardens are a way to bring people together to build stronger communities, build skills, feed the hungry and more,” said Master Gardener White. This team of four has been instrumental in educating new gardeners on U of I Extension best practices, working with groups to develop viable garden plans, cost-saving measures on supplies, plant propagation and distribution and more. They are dedicated to continuing the community garden mission.”
