1st Step Chiropractic: The skepticism of Dr. Winsor
By Dr. Philip Schalow
Early in the history of 20th-century health care, just about everyone had “the” cure for all diseases. FM Alexander claimed your bad habits caused disability and disease, and developed a good technique for correcting bad postural habits. DD Palmer claimed the imbalanced spine caused all disease, and invented chiropractic procedures for balancing the spine. It is this favorite topic that still stimulates skepticism and debate.
One bright doctor who rose to the challenge actually found something of great importance: that faults with the spine are associated with specific diseases!
Dr. Henry Winsor wondered why chiropractors and osteopaths could get people well without drugs or surgery. The University of Pennsylvania gave him permission to carefully examine 75 human and 22 cat cadavers to see if there is a relationship between diseased organs and the spine. As Winsor wrote, “of the 221 diseased organs, 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature.” In other words, the region of the spine that had a small abnormal curve was causing problems for the organs that it serves.
From biology, we find the nerve system controls and coordinates all the systems of the body. Since that is so, it is of utmost importance to ensure the nerve system can actually do so without interference from the bones and joints it passes through. That is exactly what chiropractors do. Using many different techniques, the nerve system is evaluated to find areas of interference. When the interference is found, the appropriate correction is applied so conditions favorable for healing can occur.
In coordination with Chiropractic Awareness Month, 1st Step Chiropractic, S.C., will be hosting a special day for free spinal health checks. Owner Dr. Philip R. Schalow practices a unique procedure called NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association), which restores balance to the body and communication throughout the nerve system. Saturday, Oct. 27, appointments are being taken for free spinal health checks. Call (815) 398-4500. For more information, see www.MyRockfordChiropractor.com.
