Online Staff Report
The public is invited to the Katie’s Cup coffeebar grand re-opening celebration from 3 to 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, at 502 Seventh St., Rockford. A brief program will take place at 4 p.m.
Attendees will have the opportunity to sample items from the new, extended menu, including those from local entrepreneurial vendors. The new Seventh Street Coffee, Inc., owners will be introduced, and their plans for the future will be announced.
Katie’s Cup opened in January 2009. In an economically challenged but redeveloping neighborhood, the coffeebar was created as a collaborative revitalization project spearheaded by Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries and Zion Development Corporation. Seventh Street Coffee, Inc., purchased the business July 2.
In its one-of-a-kind setting, Katie’s Cup invites the participation of church and community members in the greater Rockford area who, like an estimated 30 million Americans, are looking for a “third place” (other than work or home) to “hang out, [and] be part of the stream of life…” (Lenore Skenazy, New York Sun). This is the goal of the new owners, who believe the size, location and faith-based, conversation-focused, community building emphasis of Katie’s Cup is strengthening the neighborhood by its presence.
