Youth Soccer League wrapping up season

Staff Report

The Raptor Youth Soccer League (RYSL) has been providing quality, fun, recreational soccer programs for kids since 1997. The organization prides itself on the promotion of learning sportsmanship, soccer skills, making new friends, and above all, helping kids to have fun. No experience is necessary, and kids between the ages of 4 and 18 are invited to play.

This year, the RYSL partnered with the Rockford Public Schools (RPS) to develop the RPS Elementary League, providing fourth- and fifth-graders with an opportunity to play soccer. In its inaugural year, participation included 14 teams representing nine schools.

We are already anticipating future growth in the league,” said RYSL Director Jennifer Mateus. “We partnered with the RPS to create a league that all kids could join, to help instill school pride. We are also reaching kids who may have never played soccer before, which we are thrilled to do! Some players also may not have had the opportunity to play in any organized soccer league before, because of their family finances. We tried to keep it as affordable as possible for all families. We are not turning anyone away for their inability to pay.”

Consistent with its mission of caring for the community, SwedishAmerican Medical Group (SAMG) made a difference in the lives of local children by sponsoring RYSL’s RPS Elementary League.

Because of league sponsors, such as SAMG, we are keeping the fee affordable, plus offering scholarships to those families who cannot even afford that fee,” Mateus said. “All players are being provided with a jersey, socks and an award at the end of the season.”

RPS Elementary League games began Sept. 19 and are scheduled at area schools every Monday and Wednesday through Oct. 17. The playoffs and championship will take place Oct. 20.
