Manager refuses Freeport Sensata workers’ petition for severance pay

FREEPORT, Ill., — Friday, Oct. 5, Sensata Technologies workers Tom Gaulrapp, Dot Turner and Joanne Penniston delivered a petition to plant manager Daryl Tessman signed by a majority of the workers at the Freeport, Ill., plant demanding a full year of severance pay.
The workers’ severance package was cut just a few months before Bain-owned Sensata took over the plant — signaling that the company wanted to avoid paying full severance to its employees when it shipped their jobs to China.
Tessman refused to accept the petition, so the workers will be sending it to Sensata’s headquarters in Attleboro, Mass., as well as Bain and Mitt Romney headquarters in Boston.
Sensata Technologies, owned by Bain Capital, plans to close the Freeport plant by the end of the year and outsource 170 jobs to China. Many Sensata workers have already received layoff notices and have been training their Chinese replacements.
“We’ve fought hard for months, calling on Sensata, Bain Capital and even presidential candidate Mitt Romney to save our jobs — and they have ignored us,” the petition reads. “Now, it’s time to join together and fight for what they owe us: a full year’s severance. Another six months of pay is the least they can do after having us train our own replacements and destroying our livelihoods just to maximize their profits.”
This summer, the workers called repeatedly on former Bain CEO and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to help save their jobs. In September, they launched an encampment — Bainport — outside the plant to protest the loss of their jobs and take a stand against the outsourcing of good, American jobs nationwide. Renowned civil rights leader Julian Bond visited Bainport Oct. 6 to show his support for the workers’ campaign.
