Human bones found Oct. 9 at the 120-acre Rocky Glen Off Highway Vehicle Park, 4012 S. Main St., Rockford, are not those of missing Rockford man Mark Miller, according to a forensic scientist.
The scientist compared a skull found at the site Oct. 11 with dental X-rays of Miller’s obtained by Rockford police shortly after Miller was reported missing March 12, 2009. It is unknown whether the bones found at the park belong to a man or a woman.
A father and son from Hainsville, Ill., found a wallet containing identification belonging to Miller near a human bone while riding ATVs at the park Oct. 9. The discovery initially ignited hope in friends and family of Miller’s, who have been searching for the man since he was last seen March 12, 2009.
Investigators are continuing to search the area with assistance from Illinois State Police excavating experts and the Rockford Fire Department dive team after a cadaver dog hit on an area closer to where Miller’s wallet was located. Some areas of the park, which is located along the Rock River, are highly secluded and difficult to reach, including the area where the bone was found.
Miller, who resided in the Windsor Apartments in the 300 block of Whitman Street, was 48 when he went missing March 12, 2009. He was reported missing March 15, 2009, when he failed to report to work at Rockford’s Clock Tower Resort & Conference Center, where he worked as a senior banquet captain.
The same day he was reported missing, Miller’s 1988 silver Chrysler New Yorker was found unoccupied in the 1900 block of Harlem Boulevard, a little more than a mile from his home. According to reports at the time, Miller’s car reportedly appeared on Harlem Boulevard on the evening of March 14, 2009, or the morning of March 15, 2009. Police found no signs of foul play.
Miller’s disappearance was highlighted by America’s Most Wanted in 2010 after his family — which has been desperately searching for Miller unaware of whether he is alive or dead — created a 10-minute video and sent it to the show.
