Public input will be taken during the hearing.
A second night of hearings is tentatively scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Veterans Memorial Hall.
Nearly 9,000 signatures were collected this past summer by the Rockford Tea Party in support of a concealed carry ordinance that would be enacted by the Winnebago County Board. The petitions were presented to the county board in August.
Concealed carry refers to carrying a handgun or other weapon in public in a concealed manner. No federal law addresses the issuance of concealed carry permits, although 49 of 50 states have passed laws allowing citizens to carry certain concealed firearms in public. Illinois is the only state without such a provision.
