Rockford school district begins distributing 3,600 iPads to students

District 205 students are beginning their journey into a 21st century learning environment with the arrival of iPads at some Rockford schools.
The district began distributing the first of 3,600 iPads to students this week, with the rest to follow over the next few weeks.
The first shipment of 300 iPads was delivered to 10 Rockford Public School District secondary schools Wednesday, Oct. 17. Almost 500 iPads are scheduled to be delivered Friday, Oct. 19, in the morning, to Lathrop Elementary School.
“I’m excited about it,” said Dr. Travis Woulfe, executive director of improvement and innovation for Rockford Public School District. “This will be a different way of teaching and learning. The Berwin School District, just outside of Chicago, had a 21 percent increase in their standard test scores after getting iPads. It’s a proven advantage.”
Dr.Woulfe adds the use of iPads at some Rockford schools is part of a pilot program to determine their impact on the student learning process. Test results from the I-SAT tests given in March will be used to determine the effectiveness of iPad usage in the Rockford schools.
Rockford teachers have been trained in the use of iPads and are prepared to use them. Dr. Woulfe adds Title 1 Federal Funding is paying for the new technology.
