The skeletal remains uncovered last week from the Rock River are being transferred to a forensic anthropologist for examination, the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office reported Oct. 18. The testing is expected to take approximately two weeks.
The Coroner’s Office also said its forensic odontologist will be reviewing the dental records of two missing people from the area in attempts to identify the remains.
A human bone was found Oct. 9 by a father and son from Hainesville, Ill., who were riding ATVs at Rocky Glen Off Highway Vehicle Park, 4012 S. Main St., Rockford. The finding led to further investigation at the park, which uncovered the skeletal remains.
Initially, the finding of the bone and a wallet containing the identification of missing Rockford man Mark Miller led investigators to believe the remains may belong to Miller. However, a forensic scientist compared a skull found at the site Oct. 11 with dental X-rays of Miller’s obtained by Rockford police shortly after Miller was reported missing March 12, 2009, and determined the remains were not those of Miller’s. It is unknown whether the remains found at the park belong to a man or a woman.
The discovery initially ignited hope in friends and family of Miller’s, who have been searching for the man since he was last seen March 12, 2009.
Miller, who resided in the Windsor Apartments in the 300 block of Whitman Street, was 48 when he went missing March 12, 2009. He was reported missing March 15, 2009, when he failed to report to work at Rockford’s Clock Tower Resort & Conference Center, where he worked as a senior banquet captain.
The same day he was reported missing, Miller’s 1988 silver Chrysler New Yorker was found unoccupied in the 1900 block of Harlem Boulevard, a little more than a mile from his home. According to reports at the time, Miller’s car reportedly appeared on Harlem Boulevard on the evening of March 14, 2009, or the morning of March 15, 2009. Police found no signs of foul play.
Miller’s disappearance was highlighted by America’s Most Wanted in 2010 after his family — which has been desperately searching for Miller unaware of whether he is alive or dead — created a 10-minute video and sent it to the show.
Miller’s family also created a Facebook page titled “FIND Mark Miller.” Click here [1] to visit the page.
