Goose Management Patrol Paw-rade Oct. 20 on Rock River Rec Path

The Rockford Park District’s Volunteer Goose Management Program will parade up and down the Rock River Recreation Path beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 20. The parade will start on the recreation path near the YMCA’s north end parking lot, continue to the Sea Scout building, and turn around and head back to the YMCA’s north end parking lot.
A short acknowledgement ceremony will take place along the path near the Sea Scout building.
The Goose Management Patrol Paw-rade will celebrate the accomplishments of Park District volunteers, and honor the Rockford Park District’s specially trained Border Collie, Flash, who is officially retiring.
Volunteers will also hand out information about the program, answer questions, and invite others to volunteer.
In February, the Rockford Park District began looking for volunteers and dogs. Now, more than 40 people-friendly dogs and their owners wear specially-made life vests and patrol parks, recreation paths and facilities chasing geese into the water. The Rockford Park District’s Goose Management Program began in 2001 with a goal of bringing the community together to help control the population of Canada Geese.
