Stand Down for Veterans Oct. 24 at Verdi Club, veterans ride free on mass transit
Online Staff Report
Stand Down for Veterans will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Verdi Club, 782 N. Madison St., Rockford.
During the event, various community organizations will offer services such as medical treatment, employment consultation, Vet Center/VA Help, clothing distribution and hair cuts in an effort to show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans. The event is sponsored by State Rep. Chuck Jefferson, D-Rockford.
As part of the event, Rockford-area veterans with valid service identification will be able to take a free ride on Rockford Mass Transit between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24. Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) hopes the free rides will break down any transportation barriers veterans might have in attending the event.
According to a press release from RMTD: “The Verdi Club is situated on the RMTD No. 13 Rural route. Due to the location of the event, RMTD is aware that many veterans using public transportation will have to transfer to the Rural route. In order to allow for the transfer and to encourage veterans to participate at the event as long as they want, RMTD is offering free rides for any veteran with appropriate ID between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.”
