PBS-bound Senior Olympics documentary makes premiere in Rockford Oct. 24

Before the award-winning documentary Age of Champions makes its PBS debut in 2013, the film’s director, Christopher Rufo, is traveling to Rockford to present a free screening and conversation with featured local senior athlete Pat Beam about healthy aging with members of the Rockford community.
The screening, presented by AARP You’ve Earned a Say [1], will be at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the University of Illinois College of Medicine auditorium, 1601 Parkview Ave., Rockford.
Age of Champions tells the story of five competitors who sprint, leap and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics.
Meet a 100-year-old tennis champion, 86-year-old pole vaulter and rough-and-tumble basketball grandmothers as they discover the power of the human spirit and triumph over the limitations of age.
The athletes featured come from all over the country, and the challenges and triumphs they face are universal.
This documentary marks the third film made by the director and the Documentary Foundation that has been broadcast on PBS.
After the screening, Rufo and Beam will bring the conversation into a local forum by having a discussion about Beam’s athletic experiences, healthy aging and how to stay active.
The documentary and discussion will be shared with senior athletes, friends, family members and local documentary lovers at no cost.
“The characters in the film show us that nothing is impossible,” Rufo said. “Whatever your age, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and achieve something great. Senior athletes in Rockford and all over the country show us a way to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.”
