Three polls show Obama winner of third presidential debate
Online Staff Report
Three polls have declared President Barack Obama the winner of the third, and final, presidential debate of the season.
Held Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., and moderated by Bob Schieffer, host of CBS’s Face the Nation, topic of the debate was foreign policy. (Click here for a full transcript of the debate.)
A CBS News poll of 525 uncommitted voters taken directly after the debate showed 53 percent believed Obama won the third debate, while 23 percent believed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney won the debate.
A Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey of swing state voters showed 53 percent believed Obama won the debate, while 42 percent believed Romney won the debate. Furthermore, the survey also found 51 percent planned to vote for Obama and 45 percent planned to vote for Romney. The PPP survey included voters from Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Virginia.
A CNN/Opinion Research poll found more registered voters who watched the debate thought Obama won (48 percent), compared to those who thought Romney won (40 percent). The sample in the poll included a higher percentage of Republicans.
Nationwide polls continue to show mixed results in the race for the White House. An Oct. 23 Rasmussen Reports poll had Romney leading Obama 50-46 percent. Meantime, three Oct. 22 polls showed Romney leading (Gallup, 51-45 percent; Monmouth/SurveyUSA/Braun, 48-45 percent; and Politico/GWU/Battleground, 49-47 percent) and two showed Obama leading (ABC News/Washington Post, 49-48 percent, and CBS News, 48-46 percent).
While nationwide polls can be a reflection of the overall view of the country and are sometimes flawed, the Electoral College is what will ultimately determine whether Obama or Romney wins the race.
According to projections by Real Clear Politics based on state-by-state polls, Romney is leading Obama 206-201 in the Electoral College, with 131 votes considered toss-ups.
Toss-up states, with electoral votes in parentheses include Colorado (nine), Florida (29), Iowa (six), Michigan (16), Nevada (six), New Hampshire (four), Ohio (18), Pennsylvania (20), Virginia (13) and Wisconsin (10). States leaning toward Romney include Arizona (11), Montana (three) and North Carolina (15). States leaning toward Obama include Minnesota (10) and Oregon (seven).
With the Nov. 6 general election two weeks away and the debates behind them, the candidates and their running mates are likely to campaign heavily in the toss-up states.
One key factor in the race for the White House could be a critical nationwide jobs report that will be released Friday, Nov. 2.

President Obama’s debate win was truly impressive and now makes three out of four debate wins for Obama/Biden. People seem to finally be realizing that Mitt Romney and the GOP have based an enormous amount of their election strategy on lies, hated and deceit. From the 72 million Americans that will be left without any health insurance, whatsoever, by year 2020, under Romney’s plan (determined by two independent, non-partisan research studies available to the public), to women and minorities being drastically stripped of their equal rights because of his refusal to support initiatives like the Lily Ledbetter Act which enables women to be paid the same as men provided they do the same work (the first act passed by President Obama) or Hospital Visitation Rights which allows gay people the same visitation rights as straight people when a loved one is in hospital, Americans are seeing Mitt Romney for who he really is. From the West Coast to the East Coast and all of our our great country in between, we Americans are seeing from these debates that a Romney/Ryan plan will leave the middle class being burdened with much higher taxes while the wealthiest Americans pay less in tax because “it will help inspire job hiring” which evidence showed us in the Bush years, does not happen. Out of four debates neither Romney or Ryan could specify their “tax plan” despite being given numerous opportunities. That is not honest. That is not American. That is not integrity and that is certainly not Christian. Mitt Romney also has the highest disapproval rating, of all time, of any Presidential candidate, ever. Higher than Bush. We must understand this. The entire world hates the guy. We must be proud to be Americans. We must have a President who represents all of America and that we can be proud of. We are coming out of one of the most difficult economic times in our history in large part because of two wars we are finally ending. We are bringing our brothers and sisters home. But we cannot go backward. We must go forward. We are Americans. And we will prevail.
Stupid poll. Of course Obama won a foreign policy debate. He has had four years of data collected for him and spoon fed to him as is his due for being President. You’d have to be a complete and utter moron to think Romney could know more than Obama about our current foreign state of affairs. BUT – that’s not the point. Romney believes in the exceptionalism of America and will lead from that perspective. Obama feels we need to “be flexible” and prostrate ourselves. In my humble opinion, if you are still undecided at this point you are probably too stupid to vote. But that’s just me.
Totally agree with Kevin. Only an idiot (see Jonathan’s post above) would believe that this debate gave an equal chance to both candidates. That isn’t possible unless there is no incumbent. Obama is the president. OF COURSE he will know more of dealing with foreign policy. The question is who will be more successful. Obama has been in that situation, so we can judge him based on that. Romney has not. Will he be better? That’s your decision to make, but it is laughable that people don’t realize the edge Obama had in last nights debate for having his 4 years of experience.
Also Jonathan. 1.)Either the American people can be Christian OR liberal. But not both. The fact that so called Christians call for making abortion available to everyone (not just the legitimate cases such as rape, death of mother, inbred) and viewing homosexual relationships as a normal lifestyle is appalling. I believe gays should receive all the financial benefits and equal rights as married hetero couples, but don’t come telling my Christian child that homosexuality is not a sin. Those “Christians” are not Christians at all.
2.)If you’ll do some research on a man named Reagan, you will find that by giving cuts to large corporations, those corporations have excess money that is used to push the economy forward. How? Companies lower prices, which attracts consumers who buy more products therefore fueling American consumerism. This is just one example. Reaganomics were they key. The misconception is that the corporations get tax cuts, and then store the money in ever growing Swiss bank accounts. This is just not the case my friend.
