‘Religious Obstacles to Democratization in the Middle East’ topic of Oct. 26 lecture

BELOIT, Wis. — As part of the Fifth Annual Miller Upton Forum at Beloit College, 2012 Upton Scholar Timur Kuran will give the June and Edgar Martin Memorial lecture about “Religious Obstacles to Democratization in the Middle East: Past and Present.”
The lecture takes place at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26, in the atrium of the Center for the Sciences on the Beloit College campus.
Named for economist and sixth Beloit College President Miller Upton, the Upton Forum on the Wealth and Well-Being of Nations is Beloit’s premier residency program in economics. It focuses student research and events around the work of a different scholar in the discipline each year.
Kuran is a professor of economics and political science and Gorter Family Professor of Islamic Studies at Duke University. His research focuses on social change, including the evolution of preferences and institutions, and on the economic history and thought of the Middle East.
