The Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl from Elgin, Ill., will have 20 dancers performing on stage. They will dance to music written by the symphony’s composer-in-residence, Victor Gerardo Pichardo. He is the music director of the Grammy-nominated ensemble Sones de Mexico from Chicago, and will be in the audience for the concert.

Guest Concertmaster Joseph Ketchum will be violin soloist for the John Williams arrangement of Tango “Por una cabeza,” originally written for Itzhak Perlman, and Gershwin’s “Cuban Oveture.” This is sure to be a special highlight of the concert. Also featured will be “Suite One of the Three Cornered Hat.”

The ballet started as one of numerous activities the youth group did to keep active. As the group learned about Mexican folkloric dance, they wanted to continue learning of Mexico’s rich heritage and share their knowledge and experience year round with a broader audience. With this, the Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl was established in 1996 as a nonprofit organization under the direction of founder, Julian Hernandez.

In 2000, the children’s group was created so that the knowledge gained could be shared and passed on to the younger generations, giving them the opportunity to learn about their heritage while engaging in a healthy activity.
