Cherry Valley Township opposes Rockford school referendum

With the Nov. 6 general election less than a week away, Cherry Valley Township is voicing its opposition to a Rockford Public School (RPS) District $139 million bond referendum to be directed to improving the district’s crumbling infrastructure.
In an Oct. 31 letter to RPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Willis, Cherry Valley Township President Jim E. Claeyssen and the Cherry Valley Board of Trustees charged that the Master Facilities Plan — the operational framework for the district if the referendum passes — is flawed.
Specifically, the township is opposed to the proposed closing of Cherry Valley Elementary School and the expansion of White Swan Elementary School. Click here [1] to read the letter from the township.
“We believe the portion of the plan which directly impacts the residents of Cherry Valley is not the best course of action,” the township said in an e-mail. “While we are not supporting the referendum, we hope this will be a starting point for greater dialogue between our two governments in the future in creating a well thought out plan for our area.”
Rockford voters can vote for or against the referendum on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.
