Police fatally shoot 31-year-old man who charged them with a knife during domestic dispute

A 31-year-old man who charged police with a knife during a domestic dispute was shot and killed by police in the 1800 block of Montague Street shortly before 6 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 1.
According to reports, a woman went to the Winnebago County Justice Center shortly before 6 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 1, to report a domestic violence incident. The woman was seeking to retrieve personal items from the home.
Officers responded to the residence and a man wielding a knife answered the door. The man, since identified as Demetrius Bennett, was accompanied by two small children, and according to police, Bennett used one of the children to shield himself as he held the knife to the officers.
Officers attempted to calm Bennett down, but he refused to discard the knife. The officers then sprayed Bennett with pepper spray, and Bennett wiped the pepper spray from his face and refused to put down the knife. Bennett then allegedly put a plastic bag over his face and charged at officers with the knife, which is when officers fatally shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:35 a.m.
No officers were injured. The Winnebago County Integrity Task Force is investigating the incident.
The shooting is the second officer-involved shooting death in Rockford in the last month. Logan Bell, 18, was shot and killed by police Oct. 11 after police responded to a 911 call from a family member of Bell’s saying the teen was in possession of a handgun and was a danger to himself. According to police, Bell prompted pursuing officers to shoot after he raised his gun. Logan Bell, a relative of former Rockford Ald. Victory Bell, reportedly suffered from bipolar disorder.
