ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Rock Island County NAACP President Elizabeth Sherwin has issued a press release denouncing the unauthorized use of the NAACP logo in materials that suggest the organization openly supports U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Ill., who is seeking re-election in the 17th Congressional District.
Following is the text of the release:
“The Rock Island County NAACP as well as the Illinois state and national office of the NAACP have become aware of the use of our logo and brand in a document titled the ‘Illinois Democrat,’ which gives the mistaken impression of NAACP support of Congressman Bobby Schilling during his bid for re-election. The NAACP is non-partisan and does not endorse any individual candidate for public office. Furthermore, pictures from our events that elected officials and candidates for public office have attended do not constitute election support. We wish to note that Congressman Schilling declined our invitation to participate in our Candidates’ Forum in October.
“We strongly disavow any association with any candidate’s use of images, logos or other affiliated brand to imply NAACP support. Uses of these are against our rules and are an infringement on our independence. Our annual Congressional Report Card as found on our national NAACP web-site (www.NAACP.org) is cited below.”
