‘A Day of Patriotism’ to honor veterans Nov. 9

West Middle School has set aside Friday, Nov. 9, as “A Day of Patriotism” to honor and recognize Rockford-area veterans of foreign wars and U.S. service men and women, both active and inactive.

West High School and West Middle School is home to more than 200 students who have made the supreme sacrifice (death) in defense of our nation’s liberties and ideals. From World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the War on Terror, West High School and West Middle School students have represented the city of Rockford in various branches of the U.S. military with dignity and courage.

The special ceremony will be at 2 p.m. in West Middle School’s auditorium. Among the highlights of the day will be: Col. John Gessner, who will speak; flags presented by Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 984; Rockford Ald. Frank Beach; and Rockford IceHogs.

Participating in the event will be West Middle School Band, Orchestra and Choir, as well as many distinguished veterans and guests. The school is asking city officials for a proclamation making Nov. 9 “A Day of Patriotism” at West Middle School.
