‘Snakes Alive’ at Byron Forest Preserve’s Jarrett Center Nov. 8

BYRON, Ill. — Prairie Preservation Society of Ogle County (PPSOC) will offer “Snakes Alive” with Tom Kessenich at the Byron Forest Preserve’s Jarrett Center at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8. Admission is free.
Jarrett Center is at Byron Forest Preserve, 7993 N. River Road, Byron, Ill.
Kessenich is a native Wisconsin herptologist who has been involved with reptiles for more than 35 years. He was the head zookeeper at the Serpent Safari Reptile Zoo at the Wisconsin Dells, and he also maintains a private collection.
Kessenich’s goal is to help educate the public about these misunderstood creatures. Reptiles are a good indicator of our environmental conditions, and help to teach us that all parts of nature are interconnected.
During the program, Kessenich will focus special attention on the snakes and reptiles that are native to the region. Two featured snakes will be the bull snake and the fox snake. The bull snake is a resident of our Illinois prairies and is the largest snake in the region. The fox snake is a woodland/wetland resident and is often mistaken for a venomous snake because of its vibrating tail.
“Snakes Alive” lets you interact “up close and personal” to discover firsthand the fascinating world of reptiles. Learn their role in nature and caring for them in captivity as Kessenich lets you touch, hold and even talk to his friendly “critters.”
The presentation is free and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation.
