After racking up 63 points against the University of Massachusetts last Saturday, Nov. 3, the Northern Illinois University (NIU) Huskies football team has this weekend off. They’ll be able to use the time off to rest up and recharge as they prepare for their next game a week from tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 14) when they’ll take on Toledo at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU or ESPN2.

The last time NIU and Toledo played one another, fans were treated to an offensive explosion. The two teams combined to score 123 points. The Huskies prevailed 63-60 in Toledo Nov. 1 last year.

Last Saturday’s victory over UMASS improved NIU’s overall record to 9-1 and to 5-0 in the Mid-American Conference this year. It was NIU’s 20th straight home win, a school record. It was also their 14th straight win in the MAC dating back to last season. The shutout was the Huskies’ first in 53 games. The last time they held an opponent scoreless was Sept. 27, 2008, when they beat Eastern Michigan 37-0.

If not for a 1-point loss to Iowa (18-17) to open the 2012 campaign, the Huskies would be a perfect 10-0 heading into next week’s game. The Hawkeyes rallied late in the fourth quarter of that game back on Sept. 1 at Soldier Field in Chicago to hand the Huskies their only loss in their last 19 games.

The Huskies will close out their regular season Nov. 23 in Ypsilanti, Mich., when they take on Eastern Michigan. One week later, the MAC Championship game will be played in Detroit. Last year, the Huskies defeated Ohio 23-20 in the MAC Championship. Tickets for the Huskies’ final home game can be purchased online at or by calling (815) 752-6800.
