Community collaborations push school district’s Race to the Top efforts

Editor’s note: The following is from a Nov. 7 press release from Rockford Public School District 205.
Rockford Public Schools finished a bid last week for $10 million in federal Race to the Top funds. The bid was made stronger by a collaboration of district administrators, local teachers’ union leaders and community members.
The grant is highly competitive; the groups worked together for several weeks.
If Rockford wins one of 15 national grant awards, the district will have the resources for a full rollout of college and career academies, which were approved by the Rockford Board of Education earlier this year for the traditional high schools.
Harmon Mitchell, president of the Board of Education; Dawn Granath, president of the Rockford Education Association; and Dr. Robert Willis, interim superintendent of RPS205, approved and signed the final application.
If awarded the grant, committees made up of teachers, community members and administrators will develop timelines and strategies for the proposed reforms. The grant application targets improved student engagement and readiness for college and careers, effective professional development for faculty, and broad parent and community support of education.
