Cremation Society of Illinois and Hospice Care of America host luncheon for veterans
Staff Report
The Cremation Society of Illinois and Hospice Care of America will host a luncheon “Honoring Our Veterans” at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 9, at Tebala Shrine Temple, 7910 Newburg Road, Rockford.
Veterans from throughout the community and representing all branches of service will be in attendance. Guest speaker will be John W. Bates, USNR Retired. Bates graduated from Rockford Auburn High School and attended DeVry Institute of Technology and Rock Valley College. He joined the Naval Reserve July 1, 1965, and was discharged from active duty in November 1968. Bates returned to the reserves in 1981, joining the Assault Craft Unity One (ACU-1), retiring in 1997. He is currently Vietnow’s national director, Vietnow national POW/MIA chairman and Winnebago County Veterans Association sergeant at arms.
A PowerPoint presentation will be provided by WWII veteran Bob Persinger. This presentation will include pictures taken by him and members of his squadron at the Ebensee Concentration Camp in Austria on May 6, 1945. Ebensee is a sub-camp to Mauthausen and is considered to be one of the most diabolic concentration camps ever built. The main purpose of Ebensee was to provide slave labor for the construction of the enormous underground tunnels in which armament works were to be housed.
This event is by invitation only, not open to the public.

Another difference between the two funeral service options is the total price of the funeral ceremony. Typically a basic traditional burial method costs between two or three thousand dollars. In comparison, the total expenses incurred for a cremation service approximately ranges between six hundred to nine hundred dollars. For this reason cremation society rates have soared over the last ten years or so as more families struggle in the economic recession.
