Midway Village kicks off cultural dining series Nov. 10

Inspired by the new Many Faces, One Community exhibit about Rockford’s immigrant groups, Midway Village Museum is launching a cultural dining series. The first dinner is titled “From Africa to America: An Experience In Culture Through Food,” and is set for 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, at the museum, 6799 Guilford Road, Rockford.
This series will provide a way to learn about different cultures through the dining experience. Food touches everything important to people — family traditions, social bonding, our very identities. Through this series of themed dinners, guests will be able to experience different cultures and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation as a result.
In keeping with an ethnic focus for the fall harvest dinners, the Nov. 10 dinner will have an African-American theme. Local chef Zina Horton, owner of Zammuto’s and Sweet Ambrosia catering, will develop the menu for the dinner.
Horton, a Rockford native and popular personality, promises to provide some old favorite recipes, with a surprise or two.
Special guest speaker at the dinner will be Alene Munyemana, a native of Rwanda who has come to live in Belvidere, Ill.
Alene and her family fled Rwanda after losing family members to the genocide there in the 1990s. Her story is an inspirational one that should not be missed.
Alene, her husband, Pierre, and their children fled Rwanda after her parents and six siblings were killed in the genocide. But her story doesn’t stop there. Hear her inspiring words about how she looks on her experiences with “a positive eye” and is now active in an organization of Rwandans working toward healing and reconciliation.
The menu for the event will include fried chicken, turnip and mustard greens, corn bread, seasonal vegetables and a special Southern dessert recipe from the past, a butter roll.
Cost for the dinner and speaker is $35 per person; $30 for Midway Village Museum members. Reservations are required.
