Cornelius D. Boles, 27, was found guilty Nov. 7 following a two-week jury trial of the offenses of armed violence, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance while within 1,000 feet of a drug-free zone (a church), resisting a peace officer, driving while license suspended, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated reckless driving.
The charges filed against the defendant arose out of a crime spree that occurred Jan. 28, 2011, and that spanned several counties after a 911 caller reported the driver of a Dodge Charger displayed a large handgun at her. The defendant then fled and eventually ended up on the Illinois Tollway.
A news helicopter pilot reported that the defendant’s vehicle reached speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour. Multiple law enforcement jurisdictions were involved in the capture and arrest of the defendant.
The defendant was captured after he ran a red light at the intersection of Ninth Street and Harrison Avenue in Rockford and collided with other vehicles. The defendant was found to be in possession of approximately 2.3 grams of cocaine and $1,786 in cash. During the investigation, the handgun was also recovered.
Armed violence is a class X felony with a sentencing range of 15 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a drug-free zone is a class X felony with a sentencing range of six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon is a class 4 felony with a sentencing range of one to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Aggravated reckless driving is a class 4 felony with a sentencing range of one to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Because of his prior criminal record, the defendant is extended-term eligible.
