Mayor’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Program Nov. 18 at Rockford College

Rockford Interfaith Council presents the 23rd Annual Mayor’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Program, with the theme “From Compassion to Justice: Working Together Now that the Election is Over.”
The event takes place starting at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18, at Fisher Memorial Chapel, Rockford College, 5050 E. State St., Rockford. The program lasts 90 minutes.
The program features the Rev. Christopher Pierson, director of Connectional Ministries for the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Special music will be provided by Womansong Chorale, directed by Roberta Flaherty, and gospel singer Aaron Bolden.
Faith communities of Rockford will offer 1-minute prayers, including Hindu, Native American, the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, Jewish, Baha’i, Zoroastrian, Christian, Buddhist, Unitarian Universalist and Muslim. Refreshments will be provided.
A free-will offering will be taken for the women’s outreach ministries of Womanspace.
People are invited to bring canned goods for local food pantries. The event is free and open to the public.
The Rev. Pierson serves as chairman of the Peace with Justice/United Nations and International Affairs work area of the General Board of Church and Society and serves on the board of directors of the Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America.
Prior to serving in his current position, the Rev. Pierson served for seven years as director of Outreach and Witness Ministries. He has extensive experience and training in community organizing, non-profit development, diversity and anti-racism. He has become known for faith-based legislative advocacy and interfaith relations work.
The Rockford Interfaith Council co-sponsors the annual Thanksgiving Interfaith Program with the mayor’s office. They host regular meetings and have representatives from every major faith who pray and work for a tolerant community.
“The City of Rockford is committed to partnering with faith-based organizations to support our mission to provide assistance and guidance to the members of our community,” said Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey (I).
